Status of women in society has been always a subject
of concern. During the medieval period child marriage became quite common. In
fact in many cases it became fashion of the day. Widow re-marriage was
completely banned. Women now were not educated. These were considered as
inferior creatures to remain at the beck and call of men.
It was expected of male members of the family to
protect them. Before marriage she was supposed to remain under the care of her
father, after marriage that of her husband and during widowhood that of her
children.
A woman was supposed to serve her husband and that was
her foremost duty. It was during medieval period that Sati system came to stay
in our society. A woman was considered very faithful who burn herself alive
along with the pyre of her husband. During this period she had no choice in the
selection of her life partner. Women face gender based discrimination against
the men in all institutions and fields of society. One of the current study
shows that the India
is the 4th dangerous country in the world for women. So there is a
need for women empowerment.
